An apology

[Millitimed to a good while before Guy enters the Bar, pre 1x04 "Parent Hood"]

When Annie told him the "good news", it had almost been good news. In fact, had the baby been a girl, he would have been happy. Would have done something to support her as she grew up.

But now, as he stood in the forest holding his son, he could only regret that this had to happen.

He didn't love Annie. She was pretty enough and company enough on cold nights. She didn't prattle on like some women did. She smiled at his jokes. Slept soundly in the bed next to him, when others might sneak out and leave.

And maybe Seth would have grown up to be a son he could have been proud of.

Under different circumstances. Ones where the boy was born to a worthier mother or a different father, born legitimately and born as no threat to any heirs he would have with Marian.

The child stirred and woke from his slumber, wide eyes looking about and smiling on seeing the man cradling him. Guy stroked his cheek with an ungloved hand and gently rocked him back to sleep. He would leave the baby to die in the forest, but he could not be the last thing the child saw.

"I'm sorry, son."
